Who killed Kurt Cobain?
In April 1994, Kurt Cobain was found lying dead in the upstairs portion of the greenhouse in his late Washington home. On further inspection, there laid a shotgun on Cobain’s body, an apparent suicide note, and a single gunshot wound. It has been publicized that Kurt Cobain took his own life out of desperation and an upheaval in his consumption of drugs. It had been speculated that Cobain has suffered a long past with depression including a fare share of suicide attempts. However, there are also many that believe that Kurt Cobain did not take his own life, but rather he was murdered and his death was made to look like a suicide attempt by his own hands. In my personal opinion I find the circumstances and the timing of his death to be suspicious. Now I must state that I am not arguing that Cobain did not have his mental break downs and instabilities, however the timing and the manner of his death have always left me questioning the situation further.
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love met at a Butthole Surfer’s concert and immediately Cobain was smitten with Courtney. After a few months they engaged in a relationship and were married when Love found out she was pregnant with Cobain’s child. After hearing and reading many different accounts of the couple, I find that Courtney has a loud, manipulative, dominating and demanding personality unlike Cobain’s recluse, kind, and quiet disposition. Courtney strived for fame and financial gain while Kurt desired to create his music and stay away from the public eye not concerned with superficial interests, unlike his wife Courtney. It has been stated that Courtney Love was enraged when Kurt had denied playing at Lollapalooza, which in Courtney’s mind; would be costing her millions of dollars in revenue. It had been gathered from friends and family members of the couple that in the last months of the marriage, tensions were running high and there was discussions of divorce. When I think of who stood more to loose, I think immediately thought that Courtney Love would have been getting the short end of the stick. She would have no longer been conjoined to the famous rock star Kurt Cobain, who in my opinion ultimately gained her fame through her legendary husband.
I believe that when it came down to Kurt Cobain; yes I do believe that he was suicidal, as various family members and friends have stated, however the amount of suicide attempts that had taken place after he had married Love increased notably. His depression and anxiety had only heightened. Courtney’s behavior and attitude with Cobain was erratic, and fueled by their common drug abuse habits. I believe Courtney wanted Kurt to be some particular figurehead and icon, which ultimately Kurt wanted none of that. When Love found that her techniques were no longer of use; she began to realize that her husband had had enough of her antics would ultimately leave her. Kurt had even gone as far as to looking into re-writing his will leaving Courtney out. I feel that Courtney must have panicked and because of her rash and inconsistent behavior she decided to have Kurt murdered. Around that same time, Courtney Love was having an affair with, which must have destroyed Kurt Cobain to once again be betrayed by someone he trusted. I feel that this betrayal might have, “put him over the edge,” and must have projected his rampant drug spree, which would ultimately landed him being admitted into a rehab center. Cobain, hurt, confused and only finding solace in his drug of choice heroin, escaped the suffocating walls of the rehab center and spent various days, being spotted throughout Seattle. Courtney Love had a private investigator to search for Kurt, but by the time he had been found, he had already been dead for a few days. It is my belief, along with many others that she hired someone to inject Cobain with high doses of heroin and once Kurt was utterly defenseless and not conscious of what was happening around him, shot him with a shotgun making it look like another suicide attempt.
When looking into his death however, the traces of heroin found would implicate that his intake of the drug was so high that he would not even been able to physically maneuver and pull the trigger. It should also be noted that there was shoddy police work done in order to have, “an open and shut case.” From the beginning the investigators and police treated this as a suicide; digging for no other deeper motives. I feel there was a conflict of interest as the medical examiner who inspected Kurt Cobain’s body used to be a promoter of Nirvana, (suggesting his close connections to the band and most notably, Courtney Love. ) At the time Kurt went missing, Courtney was in LA on “business,” and could not fly out to Seattle to join the search. The suicide note found was in fact written by Cobain, however at the end of the letter there are obvious distinctions from the earlier hand writing to the next. I feel the tell tale sign was the in the month earlier when in Rome, Kurt had had an apparent suicide attempt; Kurt had od on champagne and Rohypnol, however it has been noticed that Cobain was not known to take these pills, inferring that he was unknowingly ingesting a tainted mixture of alcohol and pills. When hearing this information one must think of if Kurt had indeed tried committing suicide only a month prior, why she would not have had more attention and help for Cobain. One must wonder why she did not let anyone else know of these intermittent problems so that way she could have alerted others to be weary of his behavior. There are many questions left unanswered, with endless leads of conspiracy and murder and I personally believe he was murdered by the will and actions of Courtney Love.
